Gemstones are created beneath the surface of the Earth and occasionally exhibit inclusions, or minute amounts of other minerals. Small patches or flaws in the stone may appear to be inclusions. They can reveal details about the origin and geological conditions of the material when examined under a microscope or 10x loupe. Gemstones can occasionally be identified by inclusions, which can also establish if the stone is artificial or natural. Emeralds are among the gemstones that are more likely to include inclusions. Some, like topaz and aquamarine, typically contain extremely little or none at all as inclusions. The way a stone is cut can bring out its inherent brilliance. Gem cuts come in two primary varieties: cabochon and faceted. The cabochon cut is primarily used for opaque or translucent softer gemstones. It has a smooth, rounded top and typically a flat base. With numerous flat cut surfaces, or facets, the faceted cut can have a variety of overall shapes, including square, oval, and circular. Successfully faceted gemstones are limited to the harder varieties.
